What shoes to take on holiday?
To-day you have to think seriously about the shoes you’re going to take on your summer holidays, especially now when baggage weight is so restrictive on the airlines.
A non scientific survey around the office showed that a pair of shoes weighed between seven hundred and fifty grams to nearly two kilo for a pair of men’s shoes. The average women’s shoes came in at just over a kilo and for men’s shoes one and a half kilo.
If you are flying and the weight restriction is twenty kilo, which is generous for today, and your suitcase weighs five kilo, and most do, that will leave you fifteen kilo for all your shoes, clothes, toiletries, books, sun tan lotions and anything else you take on holiday.
One of the lightest and most versatile shoes that you can take on holiday are Crocs. Crocs can replace most men’s shoes that are taken on holiday and most women’s shoes as well. You can wear Crocs almost any where; they only weigh three to four hundred grams a pair. Crocs are good to wear on the beach, strolling through the market and for most holiday excursions. Crocs come in almost any colour so for men who don’t want gaudy colours there’s black, beige, kaki green and for women there are colours from black to fluorescent green to choose from. You can take two pair of Crocs for less than the weight of one normal pair of shoes.
For men a pair of sandals from Ecco, Clarks or Birkenstocks are all lighter than a pair of day shoes. If you’re going to be playing sports then you’ll need a pair of trainers. If you’re going to take both sandals and Trainers wear the heaviest and pack the lightest.
For women a pair of medium heel sandals, if you absolutely have to have two pair of shoes choose a light and dark pair. If you need a pair of Trainers travel in them as they will weigh the most.
As far as shoes are concerned for summer holidays you need light shoes that allow your feet to breathe and keep as cool as possible, Crocs may be ugly but they are light, comfy, let your feet breathe and are fashionable, sandals come in all shapes and styles, choose light and airy sandals that will look good during the day and at night when partying.
All in all you can get away with only taking two pair of shoes on holiday with you, three if need trainers.
One last tip, if you are over your weight limit on your hold luggage pack your shoes in your hand luggage, you are always allowed between five and ten kilo of hand luggage.
