What shoes should you wear for dancing?

The shoes you choose to wear for dancing depends on the kind of dance you are doing, whether you‘re dancing seriously or just for fun.  Men and women have their own style of dancing shoes.

If you want to be a professional dancer or want to take dancing seriously then like everything else you will need the correct equipment.  In this case you need a real pair of dance shoes.

Latin dance shoes have latin heels and are specifically designed for Latin dance. The shank, which is the part of the sole that supports the arch of the foot, is designed to keep your posture upright and forward so you don’t back away from your dance partner. The Latin heel is designed to support your ankle and keep your foot in the right position during turns.

You will probably need more than one pair of shoes because all surfaces are different, some are slippery and others are sticky.   If the floor is sticky you’ll need hard leather soles and if the floor is slippery you’ll need shoes with rubber soles.  Some floors are in-between so you’ll need suede soles. If you can’t turn or slide in your shoes you won’t be able to dance properly and could even injure yourself or your partner.

Latin heel dance shoes are bespoke and built to fit you perfectly, they are designed to protect and support you whilst dancing. These shoes are only for people that are already proficient dancers and want to take their dancing to the next level.

Men’s standard dress shoes are more than sufficient for recreational purposes or are just starting to learn Latin. For women there are plenty of styles that will suffice for Latin dance.
Make sure the shoes you choose are comfortable and sturdy. Court shoes or pumps with medium heels of no more than two inches are suitable.
For both men’s shoes and women’s shoes choose a leather sole to help you slide and glide when dancing.  If you find they are too slippery you can scratch the soles with some course sandpaper.
