Tips on how to buy shoes that fit

Choosing shoes that fit well is very important. It shouldn’t matter whether you are buying work shoes that you will wear for ten or twelve hours a day or Casual shoes for impressing other people that will be worn for just a few hours. Shoes should fit comfortably all the time.

There isn’t a universal chart for measuring your feet to match the shoes you want to buy. The UK has its’ own chart, the US has a different one; Europe has yet another scale for shoes. The list does not stop there; most countries or regions around the world have their own chart, so it’s not as easy as it sounds to buy a pair of shoes.

We all love a challenge so you’ll be happy to hear that as well as all the different shoe size charts, women’s shoes and men’s shoes have their own chart. A mans’ shoe size seven will be different to a women’s size seven. Men’s shoes tend to be more generous in width than women’s shoes of the same style and size. So if you’re a woman and could do with a bit extra on the width and you are looking at a pair of shoes that will also be sold in the men’s shoes section, such as running shoes, try them on.

The manufacturers and designers are well aware of market trends and in the same way that clothing manufacturers are reducing the ticket size to reflect a smaller size so too are shoe manufacturers reducing the printed size on their shoes to flatter consumer’s perceptions on their size.

To overcome this problem you need to have your feet measured by several sources and verify the measurements by trying on several brands.  It's a good idea to always try on a new pair of shoes before ordering on online.

When trying on a pair of shoes with laces make sure you fasten them properly. They should be tight enough to secure the shoes to the feet but not so tight that you stop the blood flow or cause pinching. The same advice goes for straps. Walk around in them and assure yourself that they feel snug and comfortable.  After all, you could be wearing the shoes for hours on end.

• Bend down and feel the width of the foot in the shoe check that the foot or toes are not trying to deform the shoe.
• make sure the toes are not squashed by the shape of the shoes.
• Make sure there isn’t a gap at the heel and that the shoes don’t slide up and down when walking.
• Take a look at the sole, is there sufficient grip or slip. If the shoes are for dancing and the sole grips the floor you won’t be able to dance. If the soles are smooth too smooth you might slip.

Use these fitting tips to help you find a great pair of shoes.  Shoes can be practical, fun and flattering.  You are going to buy many shoes in your life time, by following these simple tips you’ll enjoy those purchases even more.
