Shoes and sizing
Buying a new pair of shoes, wouldn’t it be like winning the lottery if when you wore them your feet didn’t hurt.
It’s a fallacy that new shoes hurt; the truth is shoes only hurt if they don’t fit properly.
As a child when you needed a new pair of shoes an adult took you to a shoe shop, and the first thing they did was measure your feet. It makes sense; they need to know the length and width of your feet before they can recommend shoes that will fit you.
Everyone knows that not all size 7 shoes are the same, they’re not, they have tolerances that they must abide by but they’re not all the same. Some shoes, of the same size, will be wider than others, some will be longer.
If we had rules on buying shoes a definite rule would be that you measure your feet, know what size your feet are, and measure both feet, don’t be surprised if your left foot is smaller than your right. If there is a big difference you may have to have shoes made or you may need to buy two pair or some shops will split pairs of shoes.
Another rule would be to record the difference between one manufacture and another. Also styles will vary and have an impact on size. In other words once you know your size try several branded shoes of the same size and style, note down if they feel tighter or slacker, is there more room for the toes or are they squashed. You’ll find that if a brand is tighter in one style they’ll be tight in all their other styles as well. Try as many brands as you need to but remember to write down the result.
You only have to do this once as once you know your size in any given brand and style you’ll be able to shop anywhere or order from any website because you’ll know that the size of shoe you’re asking for will fit and correctly fitting shoes do not hurt.
Don’t be fooled by an inexperienced sales person telling you that the shoes will stretch or once you’ve worn them in they’ll be fine, because all that means is pain.
