Buying shoes in Italy

If there’s a preference on where to buy shoes, it must surely be Italy. If you visit Tuscany and Romagna you’ll find on every street, alley and piazza an abundance of shops selling shoes.

They not only sell the famous brands such as Prada, Gucci, Christian Dior, Hugo Boss and Calvin Klein, Jimmy Choo, Salvatore Ferragamo, Coach and Dolce and Gabbana but shoes made locally.

A lot of the same artisans that manufacture the famous brands will also manufacture their own shoes under a variety of nondescript names and because they are in the know they are always up-to-date with the fashion at any given time.

It seems that the shoes in fashion out in Italy are open toed, medium to high Wedge heels. Very comfortable as your whole foot is supported, black white not so many prime colours this year which goes with the clothes being worn this year, very sombre, which reflects the economic climate out there at the moment.

The elegance of shoe shops in Italy makes buying shoes an experience you won’t forget quickly. The shops are always less cluttered, no matter the size of the shop, a shop situated on via magenta is very small, maybe eight square metres, but it is light, cool, one wall has shelves showing fashion shoes but no two shoes are touching. Another shop in a shopping mall in Porto Garibaldi, probably five times the size but has only ten percent more shoes being displayed than the small shop in Montecatini-termi, Tuscany.

A vast amount of shoes are sold on the internet and most of the shops have websites, which is an added bonus to those of us that don’t live in Italy but have visited, bought and want to buy more. Whenever you buy a pair of shoes abroad always ask for their website, as when you get home you can always browse their website and although not there, it’s not too difficult to bring back the memory of being there. If you close your eyes you can almost smell the hot Tuscan air scented with dark coffee, oregano and basil and hear the heavily accented Italian shop owner asking ”can I help you signorina” “mi scussi, signora, but you look too young to be married, how can I help you”  There’s nothing quite like buying shoes in Italy.
