When did men’s shoes start to compete with women’s shoes?
Women’s shoes are at the forefront of the fashion shoe industry today but that hasn’t always been the case. In fact the shoe industry came into being for designing men’s shoes. Women’s shoes were secondary to men’s shoes until the second half of the 19th century. In the 20th century women’s shoes, especially women’s fashion shoes really took off and left men’s shoes far behind.
In the last twenty to thirty years men’s shoes have made some what of a come back. Before this time the average man would own two pair of shoes, excluding his football Boots and a pair of trainers, they would be his Work Shoes and his best going out shoes.
Today men will rival women when it comes to shoes in their respective wardrobes. Men will have several Work Shoes and several more Casual shoes. Men’s shoes today come in several colours, gone are the days when black and brown were the only colours available.
As men’s fashion was propelled to the forefront of the public eye by super stars such as George Best, the Beetles, and The Stones and later by men’s magazines like GQ, FHM, men have been forced into taking notice of what they wear from the top of their head to the bottom of their feet.
Men’s shoes are an essential part of a mans wardrobe today and keeping up-to-date is a must. If you were to wear for example a pair of blocky square toed chunky heeled pair of loafers you would be deemed out of date, out of touch and as someone without the means to keep up-to-date or as someone living in the past.
When a man is dressed for success, be it work related, sex related or community related it doesn’t stop at the ankle, oh and by the way it’s always one of the three. A mans shoe will ultimately finish off the desired look or make one look the fool. Men’s shoes can dress up an outfit or dress down an outfit either way the shoes will have to match the outfit if the desired results want to be achieved.
As a general rule of thumb always wear shoes that are darker than your pants. Today’s fashion dictates a sleek streamlined image so chunky and blocky are out and streamlined elongated round toe, thin soles and heels are in.
